Dr. Harvey Amani Whitfield is the Centennial Carnegie Chair in the History of Slavery in Canada at University of King’s College and Professor of History at Dalhousie University. His books include Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860, The Problem of Slavery in Early Vermont, 1777-1810, North to Bondage: Loyalist Slavery in the Maritimes, and Black Slavery in the Maritimes: A History in Documents. Dr. Whitfield’s Biographical Dictionary of Enslaved Black People in the Maritimes has the Canadian Historical Association’s 2023 CLIO Prize in Atlantic History. This award is dedicated to the best books in regional history, as well as to individuals or historical societies who have made significant contributions to local and regional history. Outside of work, Whitfield enjoys spending time with his 9-year-old daughter, exercising, and watching American college football.
