16th Annual Atlantic Canada Japanese Language Speech Contest took place Saturday, March 8, 2014. This time it was held at ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ. President Dodds and Consul General of Japan at Montreal Arai gave opening remarks.
Our students won 10 out of 12 awards. I am happy to report that each teacher present got a winner and two of our students (one from Nova Scotia and one from China) are going to the Nationals at the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa at the end of this month.
However, the real awards came from things like a Japanese song performed by the students from Mount Allison university with our students together showing the spirit of friendship, support and the enjoyment of learning together. As well, I think we were finally able to turn the focus from competing with one another to learning from each other. Two of our students spoke about their own battles, one with bullying and another with anxiety and depression. They both got awards and one of them is going to be in the Nationals - a much greater award than anyone can imagine. She received her certificate in the presence of her parents, grandfather, brother and boyfriend who were in the audience. Her speech entitled "Invisible Illness" was brave, eloquent and compelling.
As we situate language learning within the context of culture we included cultural contributions from the community groups into the programme.

The recipient of the Dr. Geraldine Thomas Travel Award for Classical Studies is Victoria Delisle.

Congratulations Victoria!

Honoured Arts student Taryn Nicole Hines (pictured with ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ President Dr. Colin Dodds), recipient of the 2013 Bachelor of Arts Faculty Medal and the Academic Subject Award for Modern Languages: Prize of the Ambassador of Switzerland.

SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY SWEEPS REGIONAL JAPANESE LANGUAGE SPEECH COMPETITION
AND BRINGS HOME 8 OUT OF 9 AWARDS

The 14th Annual Atlantic Canada Japanese Language Speech Contest took place Saturday, March 10th, 2012 at Saint Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was co-organized by Saint Thomas University and the Consulate General of Japan at Montreal.

We travelled by Saint Mary’s bus with 17 students chosen from all of the five Japanese language groups of different levels. We were by far the best represented university. Initially, over 30 applications were submitted but we had to make a selection as the contest itself could not accommodate that many participants. Still we were able to take three times as many students as the other participating universities. Also, we were the only school competing in all categories.

The students worked very hard and presented the speeches that they wrote, memorized and practiced. They did an excellent job and their speeches were compelling, convincing and beautiful. This in my eyes made them all winners.

Students from each of five groups came home with awards, which points to the efficacy of the Japanese language programme as a whole.

Here are the results:

There were 9 major awards in different categories. Our students received 8 of them. We came home with the top prize in all four categories. Two students from Saint Mary’s University have been selected to represent the Atlantic region at the National Speech Contest in Vancouver on March 31st, 2012.

BEST IN CANADA - SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY JAPANESE

First year language student, Koh Yeonsu wins the Beginners category at the 23rd Canadian National Japanese Language Speech contest, held at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC on Saturday, March 31 2012.

Moreover, she brings home the overall grand prize.

Not only has a student from our university never been awarded at this competition, no student from Atlantic Canada has ever won any prize at the national level.

A big success for the Japanese Language programme, Department of Modern Languages and Classics, Asian Studies Programme, Faculty of Arts, Saint Mary’s University and the Maritimes.

As well as the article in the Chronicle Herald:
