Rowland Marshall describes himself as a small-scale philanthropist, but there鈥檚 nothing small about the support the former philosophy professor provides for Saint Mary鈥檚 students.

Marshall and his wife, Marg贸 Takacs Marshall, established a variety of student awards, including:

• The Joyce Elizabeth Marshall Hsia Poetry Award
• The Marg贸 Marshall Entrance Bursary
• The Marg贸 Marshall Scholarship
• The Marshall Award for Excellence in a Masters Philosophy Dissertation Award

After Marg贸鈥檚 passing in 2010, Marshall honoured her by endowing the Marg贸 Takacs Marshall Prize for Excellence in Short Story Writing,. 鈥淚 am guided by Marg贸鈥檚 generosity鈥攁nd her belief in the importance of contributing to the community,鈥� says Marshall.

When faced with the death of a loved one, Marshall acknowledges the tendency to withdraw from new experiences. His recent gift, however, reflects a continued commitment to engaging with the world鈥攁 fitting tribute for Marg贸 Takacs Marshall, a generous and caring woman who became a published author and blogger at the age of 80.
